Theresa, Mary and John did a biking excursion in the Waimea Canyon. The guides drove the bikes and riders to the top of the canyon and let us coast 14 miles down to sea level. Toward the bottom of the canyon our speeds got above 30 mph.
There were stops enroute to look at plants and trees. Most of the plants in Hawaii now are invasive species, but the guides did show us some of the Islands' original flora.
Meanwhile, on another part of the island Kasey, Amanda, and Vince took control of some crazy ATVs. Dominic, our guide, was a hoot. You may notice the matching shirts and shorts. They issue you clothing because you WILL get dirty.
We had over 3 hours of behind the wheel time.
The scenery was incredible. There was a very long tunnel.
We stopped to discuss what movies were made in the area.
We stopped for lunch and to take a dip in the water near a waterfall. Amanda got to move the ATV from the parking spot to the lunch spot. We jumped into the COLD pool below the falls. Had a nice sandwich and got back on the road.
We then headed back to the check-in point. We had a long drive back for Dominic didn't want to get back quickly. In fact, we took about 30 minutes to get back. Luckily they had a shower to get the majority of the mud off.
After a nap we decided to explore the island a bit. We drove the ONLY highway to check out a few waterfalls and parks.
Kasey and Vince even snuck in time to find a GeoCache and Munzee.
Of course, all this hiking a driving made us a bit hungry. Had to end the day with a Hawaiian treat.
